In the world of modern marketing and communication, QR codes have become an essential tool for businesses looking to bridge the gap between the physical and digital realms. These enigmatic black and white squares have come a long way since their inception, and today, we're going to explore how to create QR codes in Canva, as well as delve into their background, five innovative ideas for using them in your business, and why they should be an integral part of your marketing strategy.
THE BACKGROUND OF QR CODES
**QR Codes**, or Quick Response Codes, were first created in Japan in 1994 by a company named Denso Wave. Initially used for tracking automotive parts, these two-dimensional barcodes soon found their way into various industries worldwide due to their incredible versatility.
A QR code consists of black squares arranged on a white square grid. These codes are designed to be scanned by a QR code reader or a smartphone camera, which can then decode the information contained within the code. QR codes can store various types of data, including text, URLs, contact information, and more.
CREATING QR CODES IN CANVA

Creating a QR code in Canva is a straightforward process:
1. Sign in or Create an Account
If you don't already have a Canva account, sign up for one. It's free and easy to use.
2. Choose a Design
Once you're logged in, select APPS in the side menu on your design.
Search for "QR code" in the search bar to find various QR code apps (there are tons).
You can choose from the Canva stock app (simply called "QR Code") or choose a photo-style one like HelloQR.
3. Customize Your QR Code
Select a template that suits your needs, but for this we just went with the stock app.
You can customize the QR code's color, (some apps will let you add your logo or image in the center) and edit the data that the QR code contains, such as a website URL or contact information.
4. Download and Use
After customizing your QR code, add it to your design.
Once your design is finished, click on the "Download" button to save it to your device. You can now use the QR code in your marketing materials, both online and offline.
WHY YOU SHOULD USE QR CODES FOR BUSINESS
With the development of QR codes over the last few years, it's not hard to see the benefits they can have and how they can help your business. But if you're still on the fence, here are a few reasons to help you make the leap and add them to your marketing plan.
1. Enhanced User Experience
QR codes simplify processes for customers, making it easier for them to access information, make purchases, or provide feedback. This enhanced user experience can boost customer satisfaction and loyalty.
2. Cost-Effective Marketing
Creating and using QR codes is a cost-effective marketing strategy. They can be added to existing materials, reducing the need for costly print updates, and can easily be tracked to measure their effectiveness.
3. Contactless Solutions
In a post-pandemic world, contactless solutions are highly valued. QR codes minimize physical contact, making them ideal for reducing health risks while providing essential services.
4. Data Collection and Analytics
QR codes can provide valuable data and analytics on customer interactions. You can track scan rates, locations, and times, helping you refine your marketing efforts.
5 IDEAS FOR USING QR CODES IN YOUR BUSINESS
1. Menu QR Codes
In the restaurant industry, QR codes have revolutionized the dining experience. Create a QR code that links to your online menu. Patrons can simply scan the code to access your menu on their smartphones, reducing the need for physical menus and promoting contactless ordering.
2. Event Promotion
Whether you're hosting a webinar, conference, or product launch, QR codes can simplify event registration. Generate a QR code that links to your event page or registration form, making it easy for attendees to sign up with a quick scan.
3. Product Packaging
Add QR codes to your product packaging to provide customers with instant access to product information, user manuals, and customer support. This enhances the overall customer experience and can help you stand out from competitors.
4. Social Media Engagement
Encourage customers to follow you on social media by placing QR codes on your business cards, flyers, or brochures. Scanning the code takes them directly to your social profiles, boosting your online presence.
5. Feedback Surveys
Collect valuable feedback from customers by using QR codes to link to online surveys. After a purchase or service interaction, ask customers to scan the code and share their opinions, helping you improve your products and services.
QR codes are powerful tools for businesses looking to streamline processes, engage customers, and stay competitive in the digital age.
With Canva's user-friendly platform, creating and customizing QR codes has never been easier.
So, unlock the potential of QR codes and watch your business flourish in this increasingly digital world.
